APPRENTICE JOINER

  • Accountable to: Site Supervisor

Main Purpose of Job: Joiners work with wood, crafting it into staircases, windows and doors, furniture, kitchens, cupboards, involving both machinery operation and traditional hand-skills. Once qualified you could progress to shop, kitchen or bathroom fitting, joinery estimating or setting out, or become self-employed.

JOB SPECIFICATION

  • Cutting and shaping timber for floorboards, skirting boards and window frames
  • Making and assembling doors, window frames, staircases and fitted furniture
  • Fitting wooden structures, like floor and roof joists, roof timbers, staircases, partition walls, and door and window frames (first fixings)
  • Installing skirting boards, door surrounds, doors, cupboards and shelving, as well as door handles and locks (second fixings)
  • Building temporary wooden supports for concrete that is setting, for example on motorway bridge supports or building foundations (formwork)
  • Gaining access to work areas which may involve, according to age, climbing ladders, scaffold and working at height
  • Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems
  • Completing paperwork accurately in relation to site activities
  • Maintaining a healthy , safe and secure working environment for self and colleagues
  • Providing a polite, helpful and flexible service to clients and the general public

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • At least five GCSEs (grades 9–4), including Maths and English
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Interest in practical, hands-on work
  • Reliable, hardworking, and a strong team player
  • Good communication skills
  • Willing to work towards a driving qualification during your apprenticeship
  • Have or be willing to gain a CSCS
